Maria Alm

Authentic and chocolate box beautiful

Nestled amid the towering mountains of the Sea of Rock (Steinerne Meer), the Hochkönig and the Hohen Tauern lies Maria Alm together with the two mountain villages of Hintermoos and Hinterthal.

Maria Alm is a village from the good old days with lots of charm and a storybook nature. Many of the buildings have been preserved over the years such as the pilgrimage church featuring one of the highest church towers in the province of Salzburg, the Almwirt dating back to 1530 and the Vorderjetzbachgut farm from the 14th century. Just as idyllic and authentic as the village itself is community life which is strengthened by many traditions such as the harvest festival in which everyone is invited to take part. The village has seen a huge boost in tourism since the 1960's.

In winter, aside from the perfectly groomed ski slopes belonging to the skiing region of Hochkönig with its 120 kilometres of connected slopes, the winter hiking trails, cross-country ski trails the three illuminated toboggan and ice tracks and the Advent Pilgrimage invite magically beautiful adventures.

In summer it is a matter of heading up in the mountains – with or without cable cars – and going hiking, climbing in the Natrun forest rope course or (e-)biking. In particular, at 2,117 m, the Hundstein is a true all-rounder and Europe's highest grass covered mountain that is accessible by bike.
